Dinner fail

So last night I made a “pot roast”. I put that in quotes because really it was more of a “crap roast”. The meat I chose was terrible, the potatoes and carrots didn’t get done and the gravy was to put mildly, “Weak Sauce.”

So hey I threw it out. The kids and frozen pizza and Jen and I scrounged around the kitchen for other stuff. I think she was more successful with hummus than my, “fuck it I’m having a candy bar for dinner.”

The cookbook I’ve been reading Cooking For Geeks does talk about meals “crashing” and how like anything else you just learn from it. So what did I learn?

  1. Buy a better roast.
  2. Fuck the Crock-pot. Even on high it doesn’t get hot enough for this.
  3. Sear the roast because yes it is important.
  4. Cut the potatoes smaller as well as the carrots.
  5. Have some stock on hand for when the gravy is weak.

So there I learned from the crash dump of last night’s failed meal. Hey I got one thing right, when we threw it away it went straight out to the garage. But really that was Jen’s idea so yeah I failed.
